11.00-12.00 Collection Mapping: An Evolving Tool for Better Resources AND Better Access
Mary Bushing; Montana State University, USA
Summary: Collection evaluation techniques have evolved as a result of technological changes in libraries but the purpose and the benefits have remained the same the ability to understand the specific strengths and weaknesses of information resources with statistical as well as impressionistic data. Librarians have adjusted the tools to evaluate the state of information resources in specific subject and format collections according to the technology available. We have moved from simple quantitative data (circulation and acquisition statistics and national shelf-list counts) to the more complex conspectus techniques involving codes and discipline definitions with both qualitative and quantitative continuums to use in evaluating the appropriateness of our information resources. Whatever the tool, the "picture" of resources that results enables libraries to adjust their holdings to better meet their missions while also enabling us to streamline access to information without being tied to strictly bibliographic tags with subject and discipline gateways. Whatever the tool, however, its usefulness is dependent upon the thoughtful and appropriate application by the practitioner.

12.00-13.00 Lunch

13.00-14.00 The Scottish Collection Network: landscaping the Scottish common information environment
Gordon Dunsire; University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland
Summary: The presentation will outline the development of the Scottish Collections Network (SCONE) and describe its use as a tool for identifying collections held by archives, libraries and museums in Scotland. Collection descriptions can be searched by a wide range of parameters including location, subject, and educational level. The service provides access to item-level finding aids such as catalogues and indexes, and is integrated with the Cooperative Information Retrieval Network for Scotland (CAIRNS), a Z39.50 distributed union catalogue. The presentation will also cover the development of the Research Collections Online (RCO) service, which uses the Conspectus methodology to describe subject strengths in the main Scottish university and research libraries, and its integration into SCONE.

14.00-15.00 Conspectus method used for collections mapping and structuring of portals in Czech libraries
Bohdana Stoklasova, National Library of the Czech Republic
Abstract: Several years ago the Czech National Library decided to use the Conspectus method not only for its collections evaluation and development but also for subject cataloguing and access. Step by step other Czech libraries follow the same model. Conspectus method was applied also for subject structuring of the national universal library portal called the Uniform Information Gateway two years ago and very recently for building of subject gateways. All the mentioned areas will be described and illustrated by practical examples in the paper.
